Good readI read this book when it first came out。 I wanted to read it again before reading Life After Death。 The second read was not as good as the first read。 But， I still enjoyed it。 Looking forward to reading the sequel。

This book invokes a lot of emotions， particularly anger and sadness。 The book is written using AAVE， and the tragic storyline connects with a lot of young black girls growing up in the hood。 I wouldn’t be surprised if this book was based on a true story as this seems to be the life that many black people or people in the drug game live， unfortunately。

Re-reading this classic as an adult has revealed so much to me regarding the flaws of Winter; her thought process and the impacts of environment。 I can not front， so far， young people in stories drive the momma in me CrAzY！！！ The most frustrating point is how oblivious Winter remained to everything that was happening around her。 As much as she was the daughter of the game， she had NO training。 None。 She did not pay attention to the true rules and allowed selfishness to dictate her every move。 Th Re-reading this classic as an adult has revealed so much to me regarding the flaws of Winter; her thought process and the impacts of environment。 I can not front， so far， young people in stories drive the momma in me CrAzY！！！ The most frustrating point is how oblivious Winter remained to everything that was happening around her。 As much as she was the daughter of the game， she had NO training。 None。 She did not pay attention to the true rules and allowed selfishness to dictate her every move。 That led her to be homeless， broke and swinging socks at old ladies for cash and because she wasn't adequately rocking her Gucci Shoes。 When I was 2o something reading this I felt like I found my big sister's diary。 At 46， I am enraged at her attitude。 Angered that she learned nothing from her father that helped her in the game - her ignorance isolated her and had her being used as opposed to really helped。 And the help that was available she couldn't even see。 Midnight asked Winter what as it that she wanted。 She didn't even know how to answer the questions because she placed no value on the mind outside of what it led you to purchase。 She was unknown outside the presence of Masculinity。 I am hoping that she truly has found， Life after Death。 。。。more

I feel like this book is a coming of age hood classic that lots of girls read during high school college secretly。 It like Zane novels were passed amongst my friend group and we devoured the book in a matter of days。 This book is still a quick read but as an adult and a mother， this book is tragic！ As a teenager was shocked by the sexual exploits of Winter Santiaga， as a woman I’m terrified and hurt。 I reread the book in anticipation of the long awaited sequel， and I had forgotten how this story I feel like this book is a coming of age hood classic that lots of girls read during high school college secretly。 It like Zane novels were passed amongst my friend group and we devoured the book in a matter of days。 This book is still a quick read but as an adult and a mother， this book is tragic！ As a teenager was shocked by the sexual exploits of Winter Santiaga， as a woman I’m terrified and hurt。 I reread the book in anticipation of the long awaited sequel， and I had forgotten how this story was so sad。 I really hope the next novel is a redemptive story。 。。。more

Great read！ Loved the writing style of this book， totally different from the usual books I read。 It was hard to put down cause pretty much every chapter was a cliffhanger。 Cannot wait for the next sequel and hopefully movie will be made soon。
