Good readI read this book when it first came out。 I wanted to read it again before reading Life After Death。 The second read was not as good as the first read。 But, I still enjoyed it。 Looking forward to reading the sequel。
Ryan Bañez,
I love this book! I loved how Winter was so brave and street smart。 I wish they will make this book into film and would love to see it :) one day!
LaShonda,
This is booo is Amazing!! I read as a teenager。 I keep it in my student library for my students。 They loved it
Erin Scott,
This book invokes a lot of emotions, particularly anger and sadness。 The book is written using AAVE, and the tragic storyline connects with a lot of young black girls growing up in the hood。 I wouldn’t be surprised if this book was based on a true story as this seems to be the life that many black people or people in the drug game live, unfortunately。
Julie Cardinal,
I'm speechless。 Winter, our anti-hero, makes one bad choice after another and yet you can't help but cheer for her。 I could not put it down。 Like, put-it-in-a-Ziploc-bag-and-into-the-shower-with-me。 Also, Sister Souljah is a fellow Rutgers Alum。 I think i'm going to start the life of Porshe Santiaga tonight。 I'm speechless。 Winter, our anti-hero, makes one bad choice after another and yet you can't help but cheer for her。 I could not put it down。 Like, put-it-in-a-Ziploc-bag-and-into-the-shower-with-me。 Also, Sister Souljah is a fellow Rutgers Alum。 I think i'm going to start the life of Porshe Santiaga tonight。 。。。more
Kina C。,
I really enjoyed reading this book。 Although Winter was naive, immature, and caught up in the material lifestyle。 I really wanted her to grow up and move out of the environment that she was living in。
Shawn Dortch,
One of the best hood classics ever written!
Kieshaboo Mays,

BRILLIANT!
T'challa,
Re-reading this classic as an adult has revealed so much to me regarding the flaws of Winter; her thought process and the impacts of environment。 I can not front, so far, young people in stories drive the momma in me CrAzY!!! The most frustrating point is how oblivious Winter remained to everything that was happening around her。 As much as she was the daughter of the game, she had NO training。 None。 She did not pay attention to the true rules and allowed selfishness to dictate her every move。 Th Re-reading this classic as an adult has revealed so much to me regarding the flaws of Winter; her thought process and the impacts of environment。 I can not front, so far, young people in stories drive the momma in me CrAzY!!! Ciana,
I feel like this book is a coming of age hood classic that lots of girls read during high school college secretly。 It like Zane novels were passed amongst my friend group and we devoured the book in a matter of days。 This book is still a quick read but as an adult and a mother, this book is tragic! As a teenager was shocked by the sexual exploits of Winter Santiaga, as a woman I’m terrified and hurt。 I reread the book in anticipation of the long awaited sequel, and I had forgotten how this story I feel like this book is a coming of age hood classic that lots of girls read during high school college secretly。 It like Zane novels were passed amongst my friend group and we devoured the book in a matter of days。 This book is still a quick read but as an adult and a mother, this book is tragic! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This was heartbreaking and I didnt expect it to make me cry at the end。I read it already when I was about 13。 But I'm 27 now and what I remembered was thinking at the time was "Winter was a bad B-tch。 She said it so much in the book。I thought she was witty and conniving。 I realized even that young that she had to do what she had to do。Wow。 What I didn't take in was all the abuse she went through。 The irony that her father wanted to protect her but he ended up being the reason she was unprotected This was heartbreaking and I didnt expect it to make me cry at the end。I read it already when I was about 13。 But I'm 27 now and what I remembered was thinking at the time was "Winter was a bad B-tch。 She said it so much in the book。I thought she was witty and conniving。 I realized even that young that she had to do what she had to do。Wow。 What I didn't take in was all the abuse she went through。 The irony that her father wanted to protect her but he ended up being the reason she was unprotected。 I felt it deeper now as I'm older and I have been through some of the things like watching parents in jail。 I cant imagine though living through a scene like the ending。This is heart-wrenching and though Winter is not the example to look up, she is so many young women living in the inner city who have lost their way。 Gosh I am sitting here crying for her and her family。 I'm going to。read Porshe's story next as I wait for "Life After Death" to be released 。。。more

Christine Lee,
Had to reread itI reread this book in anticipation of the sequel FINALLY being released。 It is just as captivating as the first time I read it decades ago。
Kristy,
Interesting study of the fallout of drugsThough the language may be explicit at times, this book tells a tragic but necessary story of growing up with and getting brought down by drug culture。
Shannon L Powell,
Felt like the first timeIt’s been years and let me stress years since I read this book。 I rad this before E-books were invented and it felt like the first time。 It still relevant to today’s world events。 I cannot wait for the second one
Bria Simone,
This needs to be turned into a movieThe characters were so transparent in life right。While this is a novel, I feel like I was literally watching a TV series or a movie。 It was really that good。 I've heard so many people say that this book was really good, However I'm just now reading it。 I'm seriously glad that I did。 Overall, it tugged on your heart and kept you in edge。 It felt like this was someone's life story。 This needs to be turned into a movieThe characters were so transparent in life right。While this is a novel, I feel like I was literally watching a TV series or a movie。 It was really that good。 I've heard so many people say that this book was really good, However I'm just now reading it。 I'm seriously glad that I did。 Overall, it tugged on your heart and kept you in edge。 It felt like this was someone's life story。 。。。more

How can you love and want to smack the main character of a novel so much at the same time? Raw, honest, funny and sad, this is one I will never forget and not always in a good way。

I rated this book a 5 because it was the type of ghetto drama that I like。 I haven’t read a book like this in years。 This is actually a reread。 I found this book in my mothers room when I was extremely too young to be reading it。 It’s not the best piece of literature you will ever read but I feel like I understand the author’s point。 I understood the characters because i’ve seen the same things in my place and witnessed people like these characters。 It was dramatized and moved fast but these thi I rated this book a 5 because it was the type of ghetto drama that I like。 I haven’t read a book like this in years。 This is actually a reread。 I found this book in my mothers room when I was extremely too young to be reading it。 It’s not the best piece of literature you will ever read but I feel like I understand the author’s point。 I understood the characters because i’ve seen the same things in my place and witnessed people like these characters。 It was dramatized and moved fast but these things could definitely happen。 I mean i’m sure they have。 Anyway, Winter was clueless throughout the entire book。 My hope is that we see some redemption for her in the upcoming novel。 I found myself angry that she thought she was street smart but she really was not, like at all。 She just did not know how to conduct herself。 I wish the sister souljah part would come back around but it never did。 It was never even mentioned again。 It was actually hard to like the main character but I was already so invested in the story so I had to finish。 。。。more
CASS,
Great read! Loved the writing style of this book, totally different from the usual books I read。 It was hard to put down cause pretty much every chapter was a cliffhanger。 Cannot wait for the next sequel and hopefully movie will be made soon。
Staci,
I could not put this down!

The Coldest Winter Ever 4/5 starsPros:•Sister Souljah is an absolutely incredible writer and she has a style that you can get lost in•The characters are so complex and lush, they are real people genuinely that I think so many people can see themselves in•she painted such an intricate view of what it is like to live and grow up in the projects•Midnight! Like that's it, Midnight, I need to read his solo series because I loved what little we got of him in this oneCons:•Winter is highly unlikable。 I The Coldest Winter Ever 4/5 starsPros:•Sister Souljah is an absolutely incredible writer and she has a style that you can get lost in•The characters are so complex and lush, they are real people genuinely that I think so many people can see themselves in•she painted such an intricate view of what it is like to live and grow up in the projects•Midnight! Like that's it, Midnight, I need to read his solo series because I loved what little we got of him in this oneCons:•Winter is highly unlikable。 It was eye opening to me to see the author notes at the end of the book and see that that was kind of the point, so that girls who maybe are toxic and glorified the drug and gang world could see themselves and be scared of the consequences, but I am a super character driven reader and I could not connect with Winter。 She had absolutely no redeeming qualities。 Like even at the end sure karma comes to bite her but she didn't see anything wrong with how she lived her life and got there。 She was ride or die for no one。 She didn't get her shit together and wasn't attached to the idea of getting her sisters back or helping her mother。 Whatever friends she made she just tossed them out the second she felt like it。 I've met women in my life like Winter。 Manipulative bitches, and I hated them。 Also her inner monologue infuriated me because she literally always had something negative to say about everyone she came across, especially the womenOverall: This book has it's infamous place in the world because it is a good book。 Amazing writing, complex characters, and it makes you think long after you're done。 But I do hope as I continue to read through the other books in this world, that I can connect more to our other protagonists and enjoy her other books even more。 。。。more
